# Introduction to Actix Web

Actix Web is an extremely fast and reliable web framework designed for Rust. It provides all the necessary components for building web applications and APIs, from routing and middleware to sophisticated typed request extraction.

##The Design Philosophy

Actix Web was born out of a desire for extreme performance. Historically, it relied heavily on the Actix actor framework, which brought incredible speed and concurrency capabilities. Over time, as Rust's native async/await stabilized and matured, Actix Web evolved to use standard async capabilities for its HTTP layer, making it much more approachable and easier to integrate with the wider async Rust ecosystem.

##Key Features

  1. 1
Async by Default: Handlers are standard asynchronous Rust functions. This means you can use .await on database calls, file I/O, or external HTTP requests without blocking the entire server.
  2. 2
Type-Safe Extractors: You can easily pull data out of requests (e.g., path parameters, query parameters, JSON payloads) into statically typed Rust structs.
  3. 3
Middleware Ecosystem: Actix Web comes with built-in middleware for logging, compression, CORS, and more, as well as an easy-to-use API for building your own middleware.
  4. 4
Rich Ecosystem: Beyond the core framework, the Actix organization maintains integrations for various tasks, making it a "batteries-included" experience when needed.
